I was reading the hair tips Erin was giving her followers on Twitter and it inspired me to make this hair guide! I love the way her hair is styled for events and for her character Camille on Big Time Rush, and I know many other fans do as well.

The result I ended up with isn't exactly like Erin's hair because my hair is layered, but this is the closest look I could come up! In this hair guide, I hope to show you how to achieve curls similar to Erin's using a particular method that Erin herself had mentioned on Twitter. It's quite easy and the look is so cute for many occasions!
If you're weary about curling your hair because of heat damage, you can evenly spray in a heat protectant all around your hair. There are many brands of heat protectants sold at beauty supply stores, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc. They are rather inexpensive and a whole bottle can last a long time! One popular heat protectant spray that's used by many is Tresseme Instant Heat Tamer Hair Styling Spray. Experiment with a few and stick with the one that works best for your hair type. Regularly conditioning your hair and using leave-in conditioners can also help make your hair stronger and more resistant to heat damage.
This hair guide will teach you how to curl your hair without using the clamp of your curling iron, meaning that your hands will be very close to the hot curling iron. If you're worried about getting burned, you can use heat resistant gloves to protect your skin.

The tools you'll need for this look is a curling iron (preferably a one inch curling iron), some hairspray, and a hairclip or a hair-tie.

The first step is to split your hair in half and secure the top half up with either a tie or clip. Don't worry, this doesn't have to be super neat! This is just so the top portion of the hair is out the way when you're curling the bottom half.
Then, take a one inch section of hair and separate it from the rest of your hair. Brush or comb out any tangles.

Hair that has a natural coarseness to it or hair that already has a curly/wavy texture will, most of the time, hold curls better. If you're having trouble with getting your hair to hold those pretty curls you worked so hard on, a good trick is to evenly add a bit of hairspray to the section of hair before you curl it. Be careful to not add too much, though! Too much hairspray beforehand can weigh down your hair and cause your curls to lose volume.

Flip your curling iron upside down and hold it behind the section of hair, not the front. This is because you're going to be curling the hair away from your face. Keep the curling iron as close to the root as possible and be very careful when you're doing this or you could burn yourself. Begin wrapping your hair around the barrel all the way to the ends. (Be sure to start wrapping at the top of the barrel, especially your hair is very long, so that you have more space to curl. I know this may seem like common sense, but sometimes the hair slips to the middle of the barrel, and when the hair is all bunched together at the end of the barrel it takes longer for the heat to penetrate the hair and the curls will turn out a bit flaccid.)
Hold your hair securely around the barrel by the tips for about 10-15 seconds. Again, be careful! Your hand will be very close to the curling iron and burns are no fun :(.
After 10-15 seconds have passed, gently let your curl slip from the barrel. Don't touch your hair while it's still hot or your curls could lose their shape and become flat.
Repeat these steps with other one inch sections of your hair.

After you're done curling the entire bottom half of your hair, take down the top half that you put up earlier and this time section off just the crown of your hair and clip or tie it up.

You can now begin curling the middle section of your hair. You will be curling your hair the same exact way you were earlier, with the barrel held upside-down behind your hair, wrapping the hair around the barrel in the direction away from your face. Continue doing this until the entire middle section is curled.

For the top section of your hair, you can either part it to the side or whichever way you're comfortable with having your hair fall. For the sake of this hair guide, I've parted my hair to the side behind my bangs because Erin's hair is styled with a side-part. Now, curl your hair! When you're finished, if you have bangs like me you can leave them as they are or part them where you parted the rest of your hair, sweep them to the side, and set them with hairspray. If your bangs are long enough, you can curl them like you curled the rest of your hair.
An extra step: If your hair is a bit flat at the top and you want more volume, you can tease under your hair with a teasing comb, fine-toothed comb, or a small round bristle-brush. I know that not everyone knows how to tease their hair and it's quite difficult to explain in words, so here is a link to an awesome hair teasing video tutorial by the talented Kandee Johnson! Just add a bit of hairspray underneath where you teased your hair and then gently smooth out the messy parts on top with a comb!

And voila, you're all done! If you're going out to a special event and you want to be on the safe side, you can mist some more hairspray all around hair so that you can show off your curls all day long! |
